In Terranova, (The New Land), you can explore and experience the beautiful archipelago of the Kvarken area with all your senses. A walk from the Öjbergsmossen bog to a giant´s pot hole and over a devil´s field to the dwarfed pine-tree-covered meteorite-crater rim of Söderfjärden. Start from Öjberget or from the road Markenintie.

Söderfjärden is an unusually beautiful meteorite crater The plain is the result of a meteorite impact about 520 million years ago. Its meteorite edges are well preserved. You find the Söderfjärden plain about 10 kilometer south of Vaasa. Its history is amazingly long. The peaceful plain is hiding many dramatic and rare events worth knowing.

You find the trail about 4 km from the centre of Vaasa. Go to the parking place by the road ´Myrgrundintie` going from Vaskiluoto to Sundom. From the parking place you follow the road ´Öjenintie` about 300 meters, and then on your left there are information boards and a small bridge leading to the trail. The trail is about 4,5 km long and goes through a protected area with primeval forest.

The nature trail Bodvattnet runt is an about 3,5 km long easy trail in Björköby. It starts from Svedjehamn or the old fishing harbour in Bodback.

The Norrskär island group comprises the two large islands Östra Norrskär and Västra Norrskär as well as several smaller islands. This island group is the most isolated in the Kvarken region. Norrskär was also a military area from the time of the Second World War. Norrskär with its rich bird fauna and sensitive nature is a suitable destination only for small guided tours or private visitors.

The Eteläinen Kaupunginselkä bay (the Southern City Bay) is located southeast of the city centre. Nature trail and two Bird towers in the area. Follow the signs ´Lintutorni` from the crossroad of the streets: Kanavasillantie/Hevossaarentie

One of Metsähallitus´ reservable wilderness huts. Cottage for 8 persons (30 m²), 1 room and kitchen. Sauna in seperate building.

In the Fort Sommarö Area you can enjoy the nature of the Kvarken World natural Heritage Area by walking along the two nature trails going through the surroundings. There is a 2,5 km long nature trail, which goes to the beach, and a 3,2 km long trail, which goes to the village of Södra Vallgrund and down to the beach of Sommarösund. Both trails starts from the parking lot at the Fort Sommarö Area.

Meteoria Söderfjärden is an unique visiting center in the middle of the most beautiful impact crater in Finland. An exhibition telling the 520 miljon years long story of Söderfjärden, from impact crater to an agricultural and Natura-2000 area of today. An astronomical observatory and a bird-watching tower in the middle of the most important resting area in Finland for cranes.

The Kvarken Archipelago is Finland´s first World Natural Heritage. The land rises by 8-8,5 mm annually and creates about 1 km2 new land every year. With this rate the land uplift will create a permanent gateway over the Kvarken in about 2500 years.
